What Are Implant Dentures?
Dental implants are small posts that, when inserted into the jaw, can mimic the functions of natural tooth roots. The right number of implant posts can be used to support a full denture, thus making it possible to replace multiple teeth at once while ensuring that the prosthesis will stay exactly where it needs to be while you’re speaking and chewing.
Like traditional dentures, implant dentures can be removable. However, you also have the option of getting implant dentures that are permanently fixed in place. We can recommend which type is right for you after we have learned more about your situation.
Fixed/Permanent Implant Dentures
Fixed implant dentures will stay in your mouth for 24 hours a day; only a dentist will be able to remove them. This approach typically requires a greater number of implant posts (usually in the range of four to eight), but it comes with the benefit of allowing you to brush and floss your replacement teeth as if they were part of your natural smile.
Removable Implant Dentures
Removable implant dentures are designed in a way that lets you take them out when you need to. Compared to fixed implant dentures, removable ones don’t require you to have as much bone density, and they usually only call for about two to five implant posts.
The Implant Denture Process
An initial consultation will be needed to make sure that you’re able to have dental implants placed. Once any necessary preliminary work has been completed, the implant posts can be placed in your jaw via surgery. After that, it will take a few months for the posts to fuse with the jawbone. Then, after the abutments have been placed, the final denture can be designed and eventually attached to the posts.
Am I a Candidate for Implant Dentures?
This is a question that we can only give a definitive answer to when you visit us for a consultation. That said, you will likely be able to get implant dentures if:
- You have lost most or all of your teeth.
- Your mouth is free of gum disease.
- There’s plenty of bone density in your jaw (or you’re able to undergo bone grafting to correct a lack of bone density).
Benefits of Combining Dentures & Dental Implants
If you combine dentures with dental implants, you can look forward to a smile that both looks and feels natural. Also, you will be able to eat a greater variety of foods, and the stimulation from the implant posts will help you maintain a strong, healthy jawbone. Finally, one of the most notable advantages of dental implants is their longevity; they can last for decades as long as you take good care of them.
